Hazeltine, Gleneagles, Medinah, Celtic Manor, Valhalla ....the five courses which have staged the Ryder Cup over the last decade. A famous quintet each with its own story to tell about how the Cup was won or lost!

Soon the spotlight will be on Le Golf National, near Paris, as it joins a distinguished list of venues which can lay claim to have hosted one of sport's greatest duels.

A course where watching golf comes easy because of its natural stadium environment. Accommodating thousands of spectators eager for a close-up view of the action will not be a problem for Le Golf National thanks to its unique undulating layout.

Pride of place among this world-class complex belongs to the renowned L'Albatros course which will be ready and waiting for the 42nd edition of The Ryder Cup in 2018.

The course, designed by architects Hubert Chesneau and Robert Von Hagge, is located in the pretty suburb of Saint Quentin en Yvelines on the outskirts of historic Versailles.

Le Golf National has hosted the French Open - the oldest national open in Continental Europe - every year since 1991, except for 1999 and 2001.

A venue with a strong pedigree and background for staging top-class golf, though The Ryder Cup, with all the attention it will draw on both sides of the Atlantic, will elevate this prestigious location to new heights.

Its grand opening in October 1990 saw Greg Norman, Raymond Floyd and Jeff Sluman tee up and the roll call of French Open winners since includes Ryder Cup favourites Graeme McDowell, Thomas Levet, Jose Maria Olazabal and Colin Montgomerie.

L'Albatros

L'Albatros is rightly regarded by leading golfers as one of the best courses on the European Tour circuit. Not bad for a course built on what used to be a rubbish tip! Its dune-like landscape creates a wonderful atmosphere for the galleries.

Understandably, knowledgeable golf fans aware of its spectator-friendly layout have not been slow to express interest in attending the 2018 Ryder Cup.

The thrilling 'stadium finish' features the last four holes set in a bowl circling round dramatic lakes. A dream setting for the roaring Ryder Cup crowds to enjoy climactic classic matchplay golf. Lots of holes offer tempting risk and reward opportunities suited to matchplay format. L'Albratros has undergone extensive renovation to handle the largest crowds in Ryder Cup history.

The irrigation system was completely modernised and a sophisticated drainage network involving the large lakes was installed, improvements made because the rich earth of the Ile de France
retains water. Rainfall captured in the lakes is recycled for watering
as part of a sustainable project.

As part of the refinements, 17 new bunkers were built and 28 original ones reconstructed. Two new lakes and four new pro tees were added, while platform areas outside playing zones were levelled for grandstands and corporate tents. Spectator mounding has been modified and roads and car parks have been resurfaced as part of infrastructure improvements.

Le Golf National

Le Golf National

At Le Golf National there are few trees reflecting the architects' understandable reluctance to wait decades for the course to mature.

Several holes have been reworked with more pin placements on the 1st and 16th greens. The 4th and 5th holes have been re-bunkered and a waste area between them removed. The most significant change is a new par 3 11th hole guarded by bunkers and a pond.

Indeed, water hazards abound at Le Golf National with the first two holes - a par 4 and a par 3 - wrapped around the same pond. The par 4s at No. 15 and No. 18 play to dual island greens attached to the same stretch of land in a lake.
